NUMess v1.0
ppe for PCBoard v15.0+
This program is SHAREWARE. It is totally uncrippled, with no delays or nag screens.
If you find it of merit, a donation of $5 would be appreciated by Atlantis Software.

Disclaimer: None whatsoever. No one here is silly enough to
believe that we have to worry about a program like
this doing any damage whatsoever to your software,
system or scruples.
If anything weird happens, you got hold of a
modified (probably sabotaged) version.
Description: Will post a message to the sysop for each new user that logs onto
the BBS.
This is a very simple ppe that was written because another ppe for
the same purpose left a trashfile in our ppe directory, and we were
irritated by the advertisement that accompanied each message - even
though it was released as "freeware".
We realize that 99.9% of us view all ppls as "freeware" anyway, and
that those who appreciate the ppl AS IT IS may donate a little to
further the cause - hence the $5 beg.
PPS Disclosure: Beginning with this release we intend to include the pps with each
of our ppls. This programmer learned to write ppls by studying
others' work, copying some parts and improving upon others. As
wonderful as Clark's board is, and the provision of the language,
nothing beats taking a look at what works. Anyone uninterested in
learning to program ppls may throw the pps away. Anyone who is
interested may get a little help. It is our hope that those who
benefit from the extra file may see fit to donate the shareware fee
for our consideration - either way, we're certainly not going to
make any LESS for helping others.
Files included:
file_id.diz bbs description
NUMess.doc thisfile
NUMess.ppe the executable
NUMess.pps the code
Installation: Recommended: at the END of the newuser logon process.
(If placed at an earlier point, one may get
newuser messages for those who did NOT complete
the registration.)
Our choice: pcbtext record 123
1. Create a directory for the NUMess.ppe files.
They may be in a common ppl/ppe directory,
since the filenames are all similar.
2. Unzip (or move) all NUMess.ppe files into
the designated directory
3. We HIGHLY recommend the creation of a shortpath
directory for the storage of textfiles accessed
by pcbtext records (whenever one needs to enter
more than the field available). Ours is ...bbs\cmd
4. Create a textfile to replace pcbtext record 123,
recreating the message and accessing NUMess.ppe,
as in this example:
Thanks, @FIRST@, your registration information is saved.
!g:\bbs\ppl\NUMess.ppe
The first line in this example replaces the original
pcbext message.
The second line calls the ppe with its full path.
THE LINE CALLING THE PPE MUST ALWAYS BEGIN WITH A !
IN COLUMN 1.
(We also recommend naming each such file by the number
of the record that it replaces - saves a lot of future
headaches in finding them - this would be "123.txt".)
5. Open your pcbtext editor, as in:
mkpcbtxt pcbtext
6. Hit F3 to select a specific record, then enter 123
and hit return.
7. Press (Ctrl)+(End) to clear the entry field.
8. Enter % followed by the full path of the textfile, as in:
%g:\bbs\cmd\123.txt
9. Hit (Esc) to exit your pcbtext editor and save changes
automatically.
10. Repeat steps 5-9 for each pcbtext file that you have, or
use a universal updater on the others. If you have
language specific pcbtext records you should make a different
textfile, of course, with the correct pcbtext entry for
each one (they may be named as you see fit, such as 123e.txt,
123f.txt, 123g.txt, etc.).
You may find a better place to put it. If you do, great!
Distribution: Please distribute NUMess as is, and do not provide changed
or extra files to the archive.
Support: We can't imagine what we could help you with on something this
simple, but we're here, and you're welcome to check us out.
